The CDA is a student driven community outreach organisation based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Through our numerous projects, we are able to reach over two hundred schools in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Students
volunteer their time and services in planning, organising and raising funds for the organisation and projects.
The primary aim of this organisation is to create links between the university and communities it serves. All of
our projects are aimed at empowering learners and teachers in a post apartheid South Africa. We currently have
six associates which organise and manage different projects within the association. These associates are Arts and Culture,
Bursaries, Debating, HIV/AIDS, Masakhane (leadership) and Sport. Although the CDA attempts to have intergrative
projects which empower students from diverse backgrounds, our focus however tends to be on redress. This
means focusing more on previously disadvantaged schools.
The CDA is proud to launch the Taking the University to the People (TUP) project in 2008. This project will see
student teachers participate in intense teaching of struggling learners in struggling schools over weekends. Students
will travel to these schools over weekends to offer voluntary teaching services to learners in need.
